What is Hermosa Beach?
Hermosa Beach is located in Los Angeles County in a prime, Southern California beachfront location. Hermosa Beach is bordered by Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach and is known for a variety of outdoor activities. The city is located within the South Bay region of the Greater Los Angeles Area, which offers a plethora of locations for visitors to enjoy the sun, sand, and ocean.
Things to do in Hermosa Beach
The beach which borders the city offers a variety of fun activities for visitors and residents alike. Many individuals enjoy sunbathing, beach volleyball, surfing, paddleboarding, bars, cycling and cardio based activities. There is a beach path called The Strand, which runs 20 miles from Santa Monica to the Torrance Beach. At the center of this path, off of Pier Avenue, lays the Hermosa Beach Pier, which holds a majority of the community’s shopping, entertainment, and dining options.
The History of Hermosa Beach
The city of Hermosa Beach became an incorporated city in the beginning of 1907 and as many areas in Southern California, it looked nothing like it does today. The city consisted of rolling hills covered in fields of grain, namely barley. Interestingly, the pier was built in 1904 and was made of wood which stretched 500 feet into the ocean. Less than 10 years later, part of the pier was washed away, and a larger 1000-foot pier replaced it. To prevent it from washing away or getting destroyed, it was made entirely out of concrete and paved with asphalt. Lastly, the city of Hermosa Beach became the 19th incorporated city within Los Angeles County.
