Making History
In 1887, 160 acres was bought by the members of the Society of Friends or Quakers and named the city after the Quaker poet, John Greenleaf Whittier. The city was incorporated in February of 1898 and became a charter city in 1955. In 1898, Whittier California had a population of 585 people living there.
