Where is Orange?

The city of Orange is located in the northern portion of Orange County, California. Founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1888, it is safe to say that there is a great deal of history within the city limits. Unlike most of Orange County, there are many buildings and homes that were built before 1920 and still remain. This is unusual because in the 1960s, most of Orange County cities tore down the old buildings and built updated ones. Currently, around 140,000 people call the city of Orange their home, and after reading further, you will see why.

The Geography and Climate of Orange

The city of Orange consists of a little over 25 miles and is known for its year-round moderate climate. Like most of Orange County, Orange is considered to be a “microclimate,” where the temperature rises typically by 1 degree every mile away from the ocean and drops every mile closer to the ocean. This is interesting because temperatures can vary up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit between the coast and inland areas. Throughout the year, the temperature outside ranges from 52 degrees to 84 degrees, on average. Even though that is what one can expect the weather to be in this city, there have been times where the temperature is very uncharacteristic for the area. In June of 2016, the temperature rose up to 116 degrees and in December of 1990, dropped down to 25 degrees!

The History of Orange

Orange is a city full of history and for many, holds many memories from the past. There is a portion of Orange called, Old Towne Orange Historic District and has many of the original structures which were built in the period of time after the incorporation of the city. This area contains Orange County’s oldest operating bank, and a ton of dining and shopping areas. The city of Orange holds the record for the largest concentration of historic buildings within the state of California.

The City

The city was incorporated on April 6, 1888, and was the first city within Orange County to be planned and built around a plaza. Like many cities within Orange County, agriculture was the main fuel for the economy in this area and continued to slowly grow until the 1950s. During the 1950s, there was a massive real estate boom which catapulted development and started the building process for a region-wide freeway system, connecting Los Angeles to Orange County. From the 1950s to the 1970s, there was a need for more housing, which is what started large tract home development projects.

Outdoor Facilities in Orange

The city of Orange offers visitors and residents a plethora of parks and outdoor spaces, 22 to be exact! Each park has its own unique features and amenities, which appeal to all age groups. There are parks within the city limits that offer extensive playground equipment for children, others that have vast walking and biking paths which appeal to those seeking some physical exercise, and some that have large areas where individuals can host family get togethers and birthday parties. Each park in the city of Orange has been carefully planned and designed to fit the needs of the surrounding community. Overall, Orange is a great place to raise a family or retire peacefully.
