Living with Alzheimer’s

At A-1 Home Care, we want to work with you to help preserve the independence of your loved ones and keep them in the place they call home.  If any of your family has been affected by Alzheimer’s, you may already be familiar with the condition.  Some of us may not know it, but Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.  With new cases emerging at a rapid pace, it is estimated over 5.3 million people in our country are currently living with the disease.  In a recent editorial with Aging Care, Alzheimer’s patient Rick Phelps shared some insight on what life is like with this condition.

Rick speaks about questions that patients and family members of those with Alzheimer’s may wonder, such as when things will improve.  This disease is progressive, meaning it moves forward in advancing stages with the effects of the condition becoming more apparent as time goes on.  From a patient perspective, Rick shares how one of the hardest parts is the acceptance that his memory is slowly leaving him and the realization that what has begun with short memory losses here and there will eventually claim his long-term memories as well.
