Post-Hemorrhage Dementia

Caregiver for Person with Multiple Sclerosis in San Marino & Pasadena, CA

In an article published in JAMA Neurology, an online journal, research reveals that a larger hematoma size and location were associated with post-hemorrhage dementia within six months of the event. The term hematoma refers to “a solid swelling of clotted blood within the tissues,” according to the dictionary.  Responsible for 15% of strokes, intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) also accounts for 50% of stroke-related death and disability worldwide (JAMA Neurology, 2016).  The study examined 738 patients after they suffered a hemorrhage.  About 19% of the patients developed early post-ICH within six months of the hemorrhage; compared to their counterparts who developed dementia six months after the event, these patients showed a relatively larger-sized hematoma.  What does all this data mean for you?  If you have an elderly loved one who has suffered a hemorrhage or stroke, you may want to look into 24-hour stroke care that’s both affordable and high in quality.

Prevent Hematoma, Deter Signs of Dementia

One interesting tidbit from the above-mentioned study shows that one’s educational level was a factor in delayed dementia.  Therefore, if your elderly loved one recently suffered a hemorrhage but has a master’s or doctorate degree, he will not get dementia as soon as his peers if they have not reached that milestone.  Of course, we want to prevent hematoma altogether and not even run that risk of Alzheimer’s or dementia if we could help it.  A-1 Home Care helps the elderly in communities all over Monrovia.  Many seniors are cognitively sharp but are unable to perform menial tasks due to arthritis or other types of physical disabilities.  Our live-in caregivers will assist you with cooking, cleaning, errands, prescription pick-ups, transportation to doctor’s appointments, and more.  Getting screened for possible blood clots and monitoring one’s blood pressure are vital routine tasks that could prevent future ICH events.
