Get Your Eyes Checked, Save Your Vision

Elderly person with glasses, getting eyes checked.

Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other health conditions dominate the discussion, and the list can go on and on for seniors.  However, vision loss and impairment are major health problems among seniors today.  Nearly a third of people over the age of 65 are experiencing some vision loss to some degree, and there are really four common causes of vision loss among seniors – Age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy.

Each condition is different from another.  Macular degeneration is one of the most common causes of vision loss among seniors, but it is a slow-progressing condition that can be slowed down if caught early. Similarly, slow-progressing cataract is the most common cause of blindness around the world, but the chances are reduced because of the advances in safe and effective cataract surgery.  With the increase in diabetes cases among our population, diabetic retinopathy is increasing along with it.  Finally, glaucoma deals with damage of the optic nerve and is the leading cause of legal blindness.

As a result, no matter the degree of vision impairment, seniors are in danger whenever they move around in their homes or out and about. So, encourage your loved ones to see their eye doctor, and get treatment on any vision impairment if needed!
